Impossible flowers

Flowers photographed with a macro lens are always surprising: their geometric shapes, the combination of textures, the richness of the colour palette, the contrasts with the transformed backgrounds. The variety of their forms is infinite, different from one another, different from others of the same species, changing with the weather, with the light, with the air. Nothing seems to surpass a nature that has searched for the most original forms. We are ecstatic when we contemplate a flower and its captured image. Flowers appear to us with their own expression and evoke other images in their turn. Our mind seems to soar for a moment. This feeling of surprise, of unrealness, is recreated in these impossible photographs that arise from the combination of two photographs already incredible in their own uniqueness. And the result, as in a dream, becomes possible. The photographs presented have been taken with a Nikon D70 and a Sigma 105mm lens. The photographs were merged with the Union programme without retouching. The combined photographs were both colour and black and white.

Sediment

Social media has drastically changed the way pictures are disseminated and especially how they are perceived. Sediment is a 2018 project made as a critical act against the compulsive consumption of pictures. Television, the Internet, but especially social media, lead us to observe thousands of images every day in an obsessive way, ending up overlapping in the mind of the viewer, without ever settling there permanently. However, the immateriality of this world is reflected in the process of continuous turnover and archiving. The sediments that reach us in the form of lines, shapes and colours seem to take on a new appearance. The viewer is led to losing contact with reality, reaching a pure abstract dimension of chaos. In this project, I investigate on a perceptual level only what remains through a process of fragmentation and abstraction. My visual archive becomes mental patterns through an experimental post-production process. This process generates something new and unexpected, in which nothing is destroyed, but everything is transformed.

Since childhood, everyone in my family loves flowers, my mom, my dad, my two brothers. Good food, art, music and literature were the main topics growing up in my house, but above all, I was taught that nature, trees and flowers are the greatest gifts life offers. I look up to flowers. I aspire to what they symbolize to our whole world, visible and invisible. I am surrounded by them. While my morning coffee brews, I make my selection for the next photoshoot. I look at them all around my small kitchen.

The foundation of my life was lost in the sudden, unexpected death of my mother, followed by the decline and death of my father. Although I had been interested in photography for several years, it evolved into a cathartic process to work through grief and seek answers to the life questions that remained. I had spent too much time being what the world expected me to be. So I turned myself into art to find an outlet for my rebuilding process. Photography allows me to observe, reflect and capture the serendipity, contradictions and interdependence of humanity and nature. I look for beautiful light and intimate shadows to capture how things feel instead of how they look. Challenging my "safe" existence to confront fear of failure and the negativity of perfectionism became my gratitude therapy to capture a deeper beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".

Photography allows you to look at the subject in a different way, with your own vision, and this project does not want to narrate the flowers but what the flowers are communicating to us. For the author, cut flowers, dried, plastic or still tied to one's own plant are subjects to be portrayed by catching what they are saying loudly, a portrait because the flower is in fact the subject we are photographing. The vibrations of the subject are transferred to the reader through the addition of colour in a sort of graphic painting that isolates them by creating a bridge, the emotional bridge. The use of bright colours, even when it comes to black, referred to Pop Art even if in essence it is a strong, decisive form of sensory communication, as are the vibrations transmitted by the subjects portrayed.

Photography has given me the possibility to express myself in a way that nothing else could. When I create my work, I let myself go to what flows in my mind: I get carried away by vivid colours, lights, sparkles, things that you can only purely feel in a dream. I think that my work is about creating an illusion. With my pictures, I want to give the impression that you can also live in another dimension, like a parallel world. In this world, you are able and free to create whatever you want with no limitations. With my photographs, I am able to recreate my dreams, my different moods and emotions. In the last year, I discovered that I really enjoy taking pictures of flowers. I think that they are the most beautiful thing in the world. They are so delicate in shape but strong in perfume, so small in size but great in beauty, so short in life but with such a long effect, just like dreams.

In issue #1 2020, we bring photographers for whom the image is a way of expressing the provocative, abrasive and inquisitive relationship with the world. The Norwegian Ole Marius Joergensen made Hopper like scenes, depicting his melancholic feeling of never arriving at the goal. The Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf uses photography as a medium to tell stories that connect his inner life with the world around him. His cinematic images, representing emotions of modern times, are aesthetic and confronting at the same time. In Photo Culture we bring an introduction to the semiology of photography, the theory that analyses the often-hidden way in which images communicate. And our online exhibition Beyond Aesthetics shows the vision on beauty of ten experimental photographers.‍

In Artdoc Photo Magazine Issue #2 2020, we bring a mix of photography about our complex relationship with nature. Wendi Schneider and Ali Shokri bring a homage to the trees.
