These photographs result from a walk on the mountain of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine. To add to the mystic nature of the surroundings, I decided to let the camera move a lot during shooting. This is a technique I usually like to use, especially in a green environment, to enhance the harmony and oneness of the vegetation. In this series, however, the vivid red of the gates provides a stark contrast with the peaceful green, balancing the calm nature with a sense of action or urgency. Walking there in a parade of tourists, it sometimes seems like the inherent spirituality of the place is lost on its visitors. However, through the flow and ambiguous vagueness of the pictures, a sense of spirituality is embedded in the images. It will evoke that sense in the memory of anyone who has been there or in the imagination of anyone else.

About
As a student of many disciplines, like computer science, music and linguistics, my passion lies with photography and other visual art forms. I grew up in Amsterdam, Netherlands, but matured as a photographer when living in Taiwan from 2015 to 2017 for Chinese language studies. During that time, I had the privilege of enjoying a few trips in the region of East Asia that stimulated my interest in travel and street photography and providing lots of opportunities to experiment with different styles of photography. I have been based in the Netherlands for the past years, trying to find the exceptional in the ordinary.
