Oleg Burdzenia received his first camera for his tenth birthday from his parents. Then came time for a Zenit camera and a home lab. In 2008-10 he attended the Warsaw Film School. As part of his specialization in photography, he met prof. Bogdan Dziworski, who became his mentor for the following years. Someone who taught him how to use a light and build an image.

Nocturnal Mood Of Time

Nikita Roytman

Nikita Roytman was born in the last millennium in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. Both of his major fields of interest during childhood and adolescence, astronomy and photography, culminate beautifully in his contemporary artistic endeavors. The former got explored in much scientific detail during the studies of physics and astronomy at the University of Heidelberg, while the latter took a professional turn during the years as the photographer’s assistant in an old studio in Heidelberg. There, Nikita was granted an opportunity to learn a deeply humane and aesthetic approach to photography, while at the same time discovering his inner philosophical view of this art form and developing his own style and vision. After relocating to the city of Leipzig, Nikita Roytman has been active as a freelance photographer and artist since, while working on his current projects, such as "Nocturnal Mood Of Time" and "Noctiluscent Days" and developing new ones.‍

Natalia L Rudychev

Natalia L Rudychev is an award-winning Russian-born New York based photographer and multidisciplinary artist (writer, performer, print maker). She is best known for her work with the aesthetics of wabi-sabi. Natalia’s work has been exhibited in New York at Foley Gallery, Soho Photo Gallery, Culture Lab LIC, Westbeth Art Gallery, Cargo Project Gallery, as well as in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Portland and internationally in Berlin, Glasgow and Tokyo where her work on sustainability was awarded the Bronze award. Her work is in the public collections of the California State Library, Haiku Literature Museum in Japan and Duquesne University Library. Her haiku photobooks have been awarded. She is a member of The Photo Group, a poet, a dancer, and studied Philosophy of Art in the PHD program at Duquesne University.

Man Zhu

Man Zhu, fine art photographer, a scholarship winner and a representative of excellent student works of Savannah School of art and design in the MFA degree of photography and School of Visual Arts in the MPS degree of digital photography. The representative works, UnFrame: Relationship, have participated in art exhibitions in New York, Savannah, Cincinnati, and Minneapolis, and won the Juror’s Choice Award. In 2021, Zhu won the 3rd place in Book / Fine art category with UnFrame: Relationship.

Jose Alfredo Garza

Jose Alfredo Garza is an emergent photographer born in Mexico City in 1974. He is a civil engineer with postgraduate studies in systems and planning theory. In the field of photography, he holds a two-year diploma in photography from the Academy of Visual Arts (AAVI) (2015) and a one-year diploma in lighting techniques from Gimnasio de Arte (2016), along with several workshops related to the technique and the photography act. In 2017 his photobook Schatten was awarded by the Academy of Visual Arts. He is currently participating in the seminar and photobook laboratory of the Miradas al Fotolibro 2021 platform, where he was selected along with another 10 photographers, and he is also currently enrolled in the 2021/2022 photography master programme of PHotoESPAÑA (Theories and Artistic Projects).

Frits van de Reep

Frits van de Reep received a masters degree in architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2010 he attended the masterclass of the international photo festival Breda Photo. Since 2013 he is a member of Kunstenaars Centrum Bergen (KCB). Frits van de Reep has won several awards at international photo contests like the Monochrome Photography Awards, Minimalist Photography Awards, Black and White Spider Awards and the International Photography Awards. His work was exhibited at several national and international exhibitions.

In this issue #5, Artdoc brings the photographer as the lens-based artist, who shows us the reality we tend to overlook. Michele Borzoni photographs the often hidden places where people work. Peter Bialobrzeski showed the chaos in the outskirts of Mumbai. Dario Mitidieri photographed Syrian families in an open-air studio. Chloe Sells constructs landscapes with layers of textures and colours to express her experience of nature. And the exhibition Lens Based Art shows the work of experimental photographers.

In Artdoc Issue #4 2021we bring photographers who investigate our complex reality. French photographer Mathieu Asselin said this about his documentary project Monsanto: a photographic investigation: “You can have your own truth, but you cannot have your own facts.” Indian photographer Alakananda Nag delved into her city’s history, concluding that the Armenians could be the founding fathers of Calcutta. French photographer Florian Ruiz distorted his images as a metaphor for the environmental distortion of the radioactive sites in China. The Artdoc exhibition Documentary Stories shows different photographers who all engage in new ways of visual storytelling. In his essay, Koray Değirmenci discusses the validity of the manipulated digital image. We should read modern multi-layered photographs as metaphors of invisible realities.

In many parts of the world, humans are looking for a better life in political freedom, social justice, and happiness. In Artdoc Issue #3-2021, we bring stories of defectors, refugees and survivors. Tim Franco photographed North Korean defectors in Seoul. Charlotte Schmitz took images of refugees arriving at the Greek islands. In Peru, Max Cabello Orcasitas captured the grief of the survivors of the battles between the government and the Shining Path. Sébastien Cuvelier searched for Paradise in Iran and found walled gardens. Finally, Simon Norfolk photographed the struggle against global warming in the Swiss glaciers.

Is documentary photography art? In Artdoc Issue #2-2021, we bring artistic approaches to documentary photography. First, Cuban photographer, Ricardo Miguel Hernández, shows that national identity is a construction of collected memories. Next, Chris Dorley-Brown digitally blended many shots of East London corners into realistic and natural photographs. Romanian photographer Roxana Savin staged her pictures of the monotonous life in a gated residence. Argentinian photographer Guillermo Srodek-Hart photographed the many old rural bars and shops in his country. Finally, Russian photojournalist Valery Melnikov documented the last Armenian inhabitants of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh.
