Des oiseaux is a unique ensemble, which was first created as a collection of books (Éditions Xavier Barral) before being put together as an exhibition. Curious about everything, from nature to science, Xavier Barral launched the Des oiseaux collection in 2018, which celebrates, through the eyes of photographers, the aviary of the world; the birds of our urban spaces but also those of more distant lands. These volumes were published by the Atelier EXB team, which took over the publishing house following the death of Xavier Barral (1955 - 2019). The launch of the 13th Roger Ballen volume is in September 2022 at the Hangar.
For the Des oiseaux collection, Roger Ballen has produced a new series of photographs. In closed universes, where graffiti, signs, shadows and fragments accumulate, stories are played out that shake up our gaze. Roger Ballen's birds shatter the codes of representation, on the border between fantasy and drama. The photographers in the collection have each selected images for the exhibition. Integrated into the scenography, the books serve both to remind us of the difference between two modes of representation of the same images and to confront the original prints with their printed version.Artists : Albarrán Cabrera (ES) - Roger Ballen (ZA) - Byung-Hun Min (KR) - Graciela Iturbide (MX) - Leila Jeffreys (AU) - Rinko Kawauchi (JP) - Michael Kenna (GB) - Christophe Maout (FR) - Yoshinori Mizutani (JP) - Paolo Pellegrin (IT) - Bernard Plossu (FR) - Pentti
