The pooling of time in the present

Juxtaposed against the dark and austere mountainsides, this magical display of light, illuminating bare branches, grasses, and reeds, is especially apparent and magical.

The valleys between the mountains of the Malot - part of the Drakensburg range stretching from the Free State in South Africa to the Highlands of Lesotho - during the winter months, while seemingly unremarkable in the shadows, are almost alchemically transformed into troughs of silver and gold as the morning rays fall upon them.

Juxtaposed against the dark and austere mountainsides, this magical display of light, illuminating bare branches, grasses, and reeds, is especially apparent and magical. I took this series of photographs intending to capture this dance between light and shadow. It is also a sacred place that calls on you to be fully present and still whilst in it.

I took the name for this series of images from a Barry Lopez quote: "I sensed here the outlines of the oldest mysteries: the nature and extent of space, the fall of light from the heavens, the pooling of time in the present as if it were water."

About
Jennifer Graham is a fine art photographer and digital artist based in South Africa. She draws inspiration from the local landscapes and its abundant flora and fauna. Her images are layered with tones and textures during the editing process, blurring the lines between photography and painting. This gives her work a distinctive, otherworldly, and evocative feel. With a love of vintage landscape photography and Japanese Sumi-e art, these elements strongly influence her creations.
