2020 PHOTO CONTEST NOMINEES
Since 1955 the World Press Photo Contest has recognized professional photographers for the best pictures - presented as singles or in stories - contributing to the past year of visual journalism.
Forits 63rd edition, the Photo Contest saw 4,282 photographers from 125 countriesenter 73,996 images. An independent jury comprising leading photography professionals selected the nominated photographs and the stories that matter.
The 2020 World Press Photo Contest nominees are 44 photographers from 24 countries: Algeria, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Ethiopia, France, Germany,Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Peru, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States.
The independent jury shortlisted six nominees for World Press Photo of the Year: Relative Mourns Flight ET 302 Crash Victim by Mulugeta Ayene(Ethiopia), nominated in the Spot News category; Clash with the Police During an Anti-Government Demonstration by Farouk Batiche (Algeria), nominated in the Spot News category; Straight Voice by Yasuyoshi Chiba (Japan), nominated in the General News category; Awakening by Tomek Kaczor (Poland), nominated in the Portraits category; Injured Kurdish Fighter Receives Hospital Visit by Ivor Prickett (Ireland); and Nothing Personal - the Back Office of War by Nikita Teryoshin (Russia), nominated in the Contemporary Issues category.
Last year, for the 62nd edition of the contest, the World Press Photo Foundation introduced a new headline award, the World Press Photo Story of the Year, honoring the photographer whose visual creativity and skills produced a story with excellent editing and sequencing that captures or represents an event or issue of great journalistic importance in the past year. The three nominees for World Press Photo Story of the Year are: Hong Kong Unrest by Nicolas Asfouri (Denmark), nominated in the General News category; Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Crash Site by Mulugeta Ayene(Ethiopia), nominated in the Spot News category; and Kho, the Genesis of aRevolt by Romain Laurendeau (France), nominated in the Long-Term Projects category.
The jury also nominated three single images and three stories in each of the eight categories of the 2020 Photo Contest: Contemporary Issues,General News, Environment, Nature, Long-Term Projects, Portraits, Spot News,and Sports.
WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN APRIL
The winners of the 2020 Photo Contest and the 2020 Digital Storytelling Contest will be announced at the Awards Show taking place on 16 April in Amsterdam. All nominees will be invited to attend the ceremony, as well as the World Press Photo Festival 2020, taking place on 17-18 April in Amsterdam.
