A photography exhibition, which highlights the impact of the climate crisis, is coming to London in May.

The #CreateCOP exhibition is an artistic call to arms, and aims to raise awareness of the urgent issues that must be considered at the United Nations’ annual climate ‘COP’ summit and beyond. Comprising winners of the annual #CreateCOP prize, the exhibition will go on show at Photo London, Somerset House, between Wednesday 15th May and Sunday 19th May - having already been showcased in New York and Shanghai.

Launched in 2019, by leading global creative agency Art Partner, the #CreateCOP prize invites creatives of all nationalities, races, genders and faiths, aged 14-30, to submit work that generates conversations around the urgent need for climate action. One artist included in the exhibition is Gab Mejia, winner of #CreateCOP28.

Mejia’s video and photo series, titled The Passage of Storms, documents the Philippines as it grappled with the aftermath of Super Typhoon Rai (locally known as ‘Odette’) in 2021. The project highlights the nation’s vulnerability to frequent typhoons and captures the scars left by super typhoons, serving as a visual elegy and documentary to the forgotten lives in a sea that remembers.

Another artist included in the exhibition is Lizeth Lozano Palomino, winner of #CreateCOP27. Palomino’s multimedia project, titled Orilla Negra, was created in response to Peru’s worst ecological disaster experienced in recent history, when more than 11,900 barrels of Repsol oil were spilled on January 15, 2022.

‍Orilla Negra brings awareness to the continued high level of toxicity that resulted from the event, and documents the fallout of the incident. The first #CreateCOP exhibition took place at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, on December 8th, 2023 and was attended by a cross section of guests ranging from climate justice activists, to art, photography and fashion professionals.

The strategically chosen exhibition space, with its high foot traffic within the UN building, aimed to leave an indelible mark on decision-makers engaged in the global fight against the climate crisis.

The #CreateCOP exhibition was additionally showcased in Shanghai, China, from April 19th to April 28th, at Fotografiska Shanghai Center, as part of the inaugural Shanghai Climate Week official agenda.It is hoped that the exhibition will continue travelling to key venues between now and COP29, the UN’s Climate Change Conference which will be held in Baku in November 2024, to help keep the vital conversation going.
